Pr. Fasla paticipated in a National Conference on ” The Reality and the Perspectives of Work Conditions in Algeria in the Field of Health care” organized by the Algerian Laoratory of Ergonomics and the Algerian Association of Ergonomics on October, 10th, 2023. His intervention is entitled : ” Ergonomoic Approach in Healthcare Sector; Logics and Hurdles in a located eveironment”.
Long confined to the industrial sector, ergonomics has gradually opened up to the service sector such as: Transport/logistics/Administration/NICT/finance/Education/Health… and is also attached to the transversal study of activities in the work situation, as well as the interactive agent(s)/client(s) relationship. P.Falzon and S. Lapeyrière (1998) underlined this, recalling that “ergonomics, traditionally oriented towards industrial sectors, has recently become interested in service activities and the study of their characteristics, …”, particularly around the role played by interactive processes of the “agent-client” type in the very construction of work processes. Considered as a sub-specialty of ergonomics, hospital ergonomics contributes to the analysis of the constraints and specificities of the activity due to the multiple actors in the medical act, the complexity of the processes and interactions implemented and the risks incurred (physical, psychological, biological, chemical, psychosocial) by medical and paramedical personnel in diverse situations.
The analysis of activity in a hospital environment comes from the observation of the existence of degraded functioning in the triptych relationship – Hospital organization / medical staff / Patients. In this sense, hospital activity, centered on the preservation of human health, remains particular and presents specific work situations which call upon ergonomic intervention to understand how the real activity and the processes which underpin it are hampered. and act in terms of operational recommendations in order to improve the conditions for carrying out the activity.
In our intervention, we will address, succinctly, three macro logics; Organization / Job / patient requests -, to capture the different dynamics in complex interactions.

Long related to the industrial sector, ergonomics has gradually opened up to the services sector, such as: Transport / logistics / Administration / NTIC / finance / Education / Health … and is also committed to the transversal study of activities in a given situation, as of the interactive relationship between the agent (s) and client (s). P. Falzon also emphasized this by recalling that “ergonomics, traditionally oriented towards industrial sectors, has recently become interested in service activities and the study of their features,…”, in particular around the role played by interactive “agent-client” type processes in the construction of work processes. Considered a sub speciality of ergonomics, hospital ergonomics, contributes to the analysis of the constraints and specificities of the activity by the multiple actors in the medical act, the complexity of the processes and interactions implemented and the risks incurred (physical, psychological, biological, chemical, psychosocial) by medical and paramedical work force in various situations.
The analysis of activity in the hospital environment comes from the observation of the existence of dysfunctions in the triptych relationship – Hospital organization / medical staff / Patients -. In this sense, hospital activity, centred on the preservation of human health, remains specific and displays work situations that require ergonomic intervention to understand how the real activity and the processes which underlie it are hampered and act in terms of operational recommendations in order to improve the work conditions related to the services presented to the patients. We shall briefly discuss three macro logics; Organization / Business / patient request – to understand the different dynamics in complex interactions.

The question of a technology designed in the absence of its future user causes the whole problem of the effort to adapt the workforce responsible for its exploitation, especially in countries in the process of industrial development
One of the major barriers to technology transfer is that people in different countries, different cultures, with conflicting interests have their own ways of thinking and acting. Ensuring that designers and users want and are able to work together also remains a key condition for an effective transfer and a successful management,
More over, the prospect of developing ergonomics in African countries should be rely more on strengthening university / companies relations by ensuring better listening and responsiveness related to concerns focused on the constraints of the activity of individuals at work.

The origins of Quality of Life at Work (QLW) go back to the 1950s, a period of anti-Taylorism, from which the concept was inspired and really took shape in the early 1970s (ANACT 2013 / INRS 2019), and more precisely at the Arden House conference, held in 1972 in the United States, where the expression “quality of life at work” was used for the first time.
The implementation of a QLW approach, then gradually became a major issue and challenge for organizations in an increasingly competitive socioeconomic environment. The aim is to find a common interest between the individuals’ expectations with the requirements of the organization that employs them. American and European studies (two complementary approaches) demonstrated the interest of such an approach. Regarding the first one, focusing on the individual (Motivation, satisfaction “E. Mayo, A. Maslow, Herzberg..Mc Gregor”.), For the second (notably French and Belgian) by insisting on the construction of the collective of work, discussion and listening spaces (Inrs, anact…)
QLW cannot therefore be conceived without the quality of the work itself. Yves Clot (Le Travail à coeur. Pour mettre fin aux risques psycho-sociaux. Paris: La Découverte 2010) emphasized this by recalling that “the priority is to heal work rather than trying to heal individuals”.
Thus, Aiming at competitiveness means (re) defining “business no longer as a portfolio of actions, but a portfolio of skills (MEDEF)”, to be identified, recognized and improved within an attractive socioprofessional environment. Only in this case, we may (finally) mention the quality of life at work (or its beginnings) in our organizations.
